Dear Friends of Alexandria Roller Hockey,
After years of working with DC Street Hockey, the Washington Capitals, and Alexandria City Public Schools, we are happy to announce we are officially getting a new rink. This would not have been possible without the generosity of the Washington Capitals and substantial donations from ARHL and DC Street Hockey. As of late last week all parties signed the final paperwork and construction is scheduled to start this Friday (April 5) with the teardown of the existing rink.

Volunteers Needed for Rink Teardown
While ACPS and the Washington Capitals are coordinating the installation of the new rink, DC Street Hockey and ARHL are responsible for removing the existing boards and fencing. Our very own Joalie the Goalie has volunteered to coordinate this effort on Friday and Saturday, however he will need some extra willing hands to help. If you are able to volunteer a few hours of your time either Friday or Saturday, email Joal at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We understand there are many questions about what this new rink will mean for ARHL, so we will do our best to address some of them below:
When will construction start and how long will it take to finish?
Construction will start this Friday (April 5) with construction expected to take approximately three weeks. This means, very tentatively, we would hope to resume games by late April or early May. However, it could take longer depending on weather and any other unexpected delays. We will do our best to keep everyone up to date on the progress over the coming weeks.
How will this impact the current season?
We are simply going to pause all play, regardless of where we are in the season. We will pick up where we left off in the season after the new rink is built.
How will this impact the way the rink is run?
The new rink does not impact the management of ARHL in any way. We are confident that with the improvements to the rink the quality of play will also improve. We hope this will give us the chance to grow the leagues where needed, and begin a new chapter at Raue Pond.
Will costs change?
Over the past couple of years ARHL ownership has made significant out-of-pocket investments to sustain ARHL and ensure the continuation of roller hockey at Raue Pond. In addition, the current fee structure has not been changed in over a decade and does not reflect inflation and the actual cost of doing business, making it unsustainable. As such, we will be updating the fee structure upon completion of the rink to the following:
Individual registration fee: $119
Team registration fee: $899
In addition to the change in league fees, we will also be updating roster requirements to only require 8 paid players per team, as opposed to the current 9 paid players. The new fee structure will take effect for the Summer/Fall 2019 seasons for all leagues. This is still a steal in comparison to leagues like Dulles where individual costs are $150 per player.
What will the new surface be like?
The new surface will be an outdoor version of SportCourt. This surface will likely be slicker than the current surface, so you may need to purchase new, softer wheels. However, this new surface should allow the rink to dry quicker and allow us to play when we previously couldn’t due to moisture collecting on the concrete surface.
Will we use a ball or a puck?
All leagues will continue to use a ball. Depending on the level of interest we may explore creating a puck league at a future date.
If you have any questions, please send us an email and we will try our best to address them. We are all very excited for the next chapter of hockey at Raue Pond.
